But where he's from they all start drinking around 16. Not entirely legal though.

Oh, I was almost sure the commentators said he was 19 yesterday. It will be interesting to see what they do if he wins then. The champagne wouldn't be big deal but I'm sure someone will complain about F1's stance on underage drinking possibly making it a bigger deal.
I'm pretty sure 16-17 is common age to start drinking all around Europe.

Behind the scenes he might get a sip, but if they start giving him champagne on the podium, then all the 16 and 17 year olds will want to be F1 drivers.

You can drink at any age you like in private but you usually need to be 18 to be served or to buy alcoholic drinks. To get it free on the podium? Dunno.

As I said, F1/FIA would probably be cool with it (it's not like the drivers drink a whole lot on the podium anyway) but there is slight chance it would create bad publicity.

Usually in racing when a member of the podium is underage (I think in the country where the race was held) they just give them all glass bottles of milk and they toast with that.
